A Celebration of Education, Heritage and Community

Salaam was pleased to support Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Victoria’s annual Sir Syed Day celebrations in Melbourne on 17 October.

The event brought together approximately 250 attendees for an evening celebrating education, heritage and community within the Indian Australian Muslim community.

More than a commemoration, the gathering reflected the enduring relationships formed through Aligarh Muslim University and the role that shared educational and cultural experiences can play in bringing people together across generations.

Honouring the Legacy of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan

Sir Syed Day commemorates Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the pioneering educationist and founder of the institution that later became Aligarh Muslim University.

His vision placed education at the centre of progress and opportunity. That legacy continues through the generations of students and alumni who maintain their connection to the university and carry its values into communities around the world.

The Melbourne celebration provided an opportunity for alumni, families and friends to reflect on that history while recognising the relationships and traditions that continue to grow from it.

For many in attendance, the evening was also an opportunity to reconnect with people who share a common connection to AMU. Conversations throughout the event reflected the strength of an alumni community that remains connected not only by an institution, but also by shared experiences, memories and a commitment to education.

Education as a Foundation for Community

Education does more than build knowledge. It can create confidence, strengthen identity and give people the tools to contribute meaningfully to the communities around them.

This spirit was central to the Sir Syed Day celebration. By bringing together members of Melbourne’s Indian Australian Muslim community, the event created space to honour the past while also encouraging new conversations and connections.

Events like this demonstrate how cultural and educational traditions can remain relevant across generations. They allow established community members to share their experiences, while giving younger generations an opportunity to better understand the people and ideas that helped shape their heritage.

Salaam’s Connection to the Evening

Representing Salaam, Community Relationships Manager Faraz Nomani addressed the gathering and reflected on his own family connections to Aligarh Muslim University.

This personal connection added another layer of meaning to the evening, linking the history being celebrated with the lived experiences of families whose relationships with AMU continue across generations.

Faraz also shared more about Salaam and its work within the Australian Muslim community. This included Salaam’s commitment to supporting Australian Muslims through Shariah-compliant financial solutions and community-focused initiatives.

The gathering offered Salaam a valuable opportunity to listen, learn and connect with members of Melbourne’s AMU alumni network. It also created space to exchange ideas, better understand the community’s experiences and build relationships that can continue beyond the event itself.

Strengthening Relationships Through Shared Values

Salaam’s involvement in Sir Syed Day reflects the importance of supporting community-led events that bring people together around shared values.

Education, service and community connection are themes that extend well beyond any single institution or event. They help create stronger networks, encourage collaboration and provide opportunities for people and organisations to learn from one another.

The evening demonstrated the value of creating spaces where heritage can be celebrated openly and where people can form new relationships through shared experiences.

Salaam was grateful to Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Victoria and its President, Abrar Hasan Khan, for the invitation and the opportunity to be part of this longstanding community tradition.

We look forward to continuing to connect with organisations and communities that are helping strengthen belonging, education and opportunity for Australian Muslims.
